CostWhat does tax prep actually cost around here?
A straight look at Southwest Florida prices, what makes one return cost more than another, and the one fee structure you should walk away from.
Checked September 2026.
For a straightforward individual return in this area, expect the low hundreds.
When we looked at Thumbtack's Naples listings in September 2026, the average quoted for an individual return was about $242, with most falling between roughly $137 and $454. That is a directory figure rather than a quote, and the spread is the interesting part: it is almost entirely about which schedules your return needs.
What actually moves the price
- Schedules. A W-2 and a standard deduction is one job. Add a Schedule C, a Schedule E or a K-1 and you have added hours.
- States. Florida has no state income tax, so Florida-only clients often file federal alone. Move mid-year or own property elsewhere and that changes.
- Condition of the records. Clean books cost less to file from than a year of bank statements.
- Timing. Everything is harder in the first week of April, for everyone.
- Prior years. Catching up on unfiled returns is priced per year, because it is per year of work.
The fee structure to refuse
If a preparer charges a percentage of your refund, leave. It gives them a financial stake in making your refund larger, which is the opposite of the incentive you want on a document you sign under penalty of perjury. The IRS lists it among the warning signs of a bad preparer, and so does every consumer protection guide.

When you should not pay anyone
If your income is under the VITA programme limit and your return is simple, the IRS-sponsored free preparation sites are good and we will tell you to use them. The same goes for a single W-2 with no dependents and no deductions: that is what free filing options are for.
Paying for a preparer starts making sense when something on your return needs judgement rather than data entry.
What we charge
We do not publish prices, because the honest number depends on your return and we would rather quote it than hedge it. You hear the figure on the free fifteen-minute call, before any work starts, and it does not change afterwards unless your situation turns out to be different from what you described on the call.
Cost questions.
What is the average cost to get your taxes prepared?
For a straightforward individual return in Southwest Florida, directory listings sit in the low hundreds. When we checked Thumbtack's Naples listings in September 2026, the average quoted was around $242, with most between roughly $137 and $454. Business returns, rentals and multi-state filings run higher because they take longer. Treat any single average carefully: it is a directory figure, not a quote.
Why do quotes vary so much for the same return?
Because the forms vary. A W-2 and a standard deduction is a different job from a Schedule C with depreciation, or two states, or a K-1 that arrives late. Most of the price is time, and most of the time is the schedules attached to the 1040.
Is a percentage-of-refund fee normal?
No, and it is a reason to leave. Tying the fee to the refund gives the preparer a stake in making the refund bigger, which is exactly the incentive you do not want on your return. The IRS lists it among the warning signs of a bad preparer.
Is software cheaper?
For a simple return, yes, and we will say so if that is your situation. Software gets expensive in a different way once your return has a business, rental property, several states or an IRS letter behind it, because the questionnaire cannot ask what it does not know to ask.
What does Zolt charge?
We do not publish prices, because the honest number depends on your return. You get it on the free call, before any work starts, and it does not move afterwards unless your situation turns out to be different from what you described.
Are there free options?
Yes, and they are worth knowing about. The IRS VITA programme prepares returns free for people under an income limit, and there are free filing options for simple returns. If you qualify and your return is simple, use them. We will point you there rather than take the work.
